There's a moment in every host's life when the closet must produce a bed, and the air mattress exists for exactly that moment. Judged as what it is — an emergency bed that stores flat — it's a reasonable object. Judged as furniture, it's a slow-motion disappointment, and the reviews section of every model in the category is a chronicle of people discovering the difference.

The physics is unsentimental. An inflatable bladder under a warm body will soften overnight as air cools and seams work; the well-made ones soften slower, and that's the entire quality spectrum. Air also insulates poorly downward, so the bed sleeps noticeably cold without a proper layer between sleeper and surface — a folded blanket under the fitted sheet does more for guest comfort than any feature on the box. And the failure mode is universal: one day a seam or valve lets go, the repair patch disappoints, and the object is done. That's not a defect of the cheap ones; it's the category's retirement plan.

Spend accordingly. A modest name-brand model with a built-in pump covers the real use case; the premium tier mostly buys a taller frame, a quieter pump and better marketing, while the fundamental object underneath remains a bag of air on a countdown. The money saved belongs in better guest bedding, which guests actually notice.

And know when to leave the category. If someone sleeps over more than a handful of nights a year, a folding guest bed or a modest real mattress repays itself in comfort and in not re-buying inflatables. The air mattress is for the surprise visit — buy it cheap, store it dry, and expect exactly what it is.
